Razer BlackWidow keyboard

Razer BlackWidow keyboard

Pressing a key on this gaming keyboard feels like you are clicking a mouse button. Although it might come across as unconventional, the BlackWidow‘s creators have built it this way so that the keys give gamers a crisp tactile feedback.

The Razer BlackWidow comes with fully programmable keys and five extra dedicated gaming keys that users can further customise. Macros can also be recorded on-the-fly.

Users can program this keyboard to suit different games or software, which they can assign to a profile.

This keyboard comes in two versions – the regular Razer BlackWidow and the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate.

The Ultimate version of this keyboard features individually backlit keys that make it suitable for use in low light.

SingStar Dance

SingStar Dance

Having made its mark as the premier singing game on consoles, SingStar has expanded its routine with some dancing but everything ends up looking more burlesque than brilliant.

With the addition of PlayStation Move controllers, you can now dance to the songs on disc, ranging from NSync’s Bye Bye Bye to Gwen Stefani’s What You Waiting For?

The problem is, I do not know how to dance.

Compared with the Dance Central game on the Xbox Kinect, which has step-by-step instructions and walkthroughs, dancing on SingStar Dance is akin to learning how to dance by watching movies like Flashdance or Dirty Dancing.

Alongside the lyrics on display is a video of a dancer that you watch and try desperately to imitate. And that is all there is.

When they move, you move, but this visual imitation means you will always be a second slower in your steps.

Whereas Dance Central has visual cues informing dancers of the next few moves, and even has a lesson mode for folks like me, SingStar Dance assumes you are a natural born dancer.

Points are scored with the camera tracking the Move controller, to see if it moves in accordance with those of the video being played, but I ended up looking more like a wayward bartender holding a radioactive mixer than a club dancer.

And the other let down: you cannot dance and sing at the same time. Well, you could, if you call holding a microphone with one hand to the mouth, and moving the other vigorously, dancing.

If you use the wired microphones provided, the wire will interfere with spins and other movements. Those who own wireless mics may fare better, but try matching the pitch of the song while gyrating.

This is more a tag team routine, much like Wham, where you get a lead singer and the other guy whose name no one can remember.

Luckily, SingStar maintains the quality of tracks on the disc, with popular tunes like Paula Abdul’s Straight Up and I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor.

For those who want to master more realistic but complex dance routines the hard way, as compared to Dance Central, feel free to mirror the ones in the game if you can.

If singing is more your thing, SingStar 2offers a library of over a dozen game releases and thousands of songs for download, to built your own karaoke collection.

Mafia 2
This open-ended action adventure surprised us with cinematic storytelling and stunning DX11 graphics. The setting is the mid-20th century in the fictional Empire City. You play as Vito, a World War II veteran who returns home to a life of crime. The experience bears a striking resemblance to Mario Puzo at his finest. Best of all, we got to play on a big-screen display in 3D courtesy of Nvidia’s 3D Vision technology.

Rage

The next highly anticipated shooter from id Software impressed us because:
1) the role-playing and story elements represent a departure for id Software
2) you can use looted artifices to build new weapons and gadgets
3) it’s the next Carmack engine and should be a great benchmarking tool.

Cyborg R.A.T. 7 and Microsoft Sidewinder X6

This Cyborg R.A.T. 7 Gaming Mouse mouse goes beyond the norm for gaming mice, offering an insane amount of customization (you can swap out parts and adjust the length, height, and width of the mouse), and a couple of awesome new features, including a temporary DPI-dropping “sniper button” and an industrial-strength metal thumbwheel.

For our gaming keyboard, we went with Microsoft’s SideWinder x6 model, which combines an excellent-feeling keyboard with a solid set of features, including macro keys, profiles, and media controls.

Xbox 360 KINECT

Xbox 360 KINECT

Regardless of what you think about Wii-style games, the tech behind Kinect is interesting. The facial and skeletal tracking / recognition come courtesy of an RGB camera, while movements are detected by two 3D depth sensors. We were surprised to also discover that a multiarray mic allowed us to use Kinect to control the Xbox with our voice. The proprietary USB connector makes it Xbox 360–only for now, but it’s easy to imagine this being ported to the PC in time.
