Everquest 2: Destiny Of Velious

Everquest 2: Destiny Of Velious

It is hard to believe that Everquest 2 is more than six years old. Destiny of Velious, the series’ seventh expansion, reminds us why this grand daddy of online role-playing games is still around. Three major introductions – public quests, flying mounts and item stat changes – inject new life into the series.

Continuing the series’ storyline, this instalment transports players to the icy continent Velious. The dreaded Ages End, a doomsday prophecy portending the end of the universe, continues to tick on as players race to avert disaster.

Public quests – in which players can join or leave a dynamically changing battle at any time – are great fun. Players can play solo if no one else is around to help and still get some decent loot. However, the fun starts only if more join in the battle, as the difficulty scales up and rewards become bigger.

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

Japanese video game publisher Square Enix has breathed new life into this PlayStation Portable remake of Tactics Ogre, subtitled ‘Let Us Cling Together‘.

First appearing on the Super Nintendo platform more than 16 years ago, this strategy role-playing game sets players as Denam, a teenage boy who is trying to save the leader of his people. The story rapidly escalates into an epic civil war as the three races inhabiting the country of Valeria go at one another.

And what a story it is. This game makes you want to sit back with a cuppa to take in the pages of backstories in order to grasp the intricate twists and turns.

Total War: Shogun 2

Total War: Shogun 2

The place is Japan. The year, 1545. It is the era of the Sengoku Jidai – the historical Warring States period in Japan where warlords ruled and feuded.

The Ashikaga shogunate which has ruled Japan for 400 years has grown weak. Warlords – known as daimyo – are eyeing the throne. You are one such daimyo and your ambition is to conquer the rest and be the new Shogun.

Developer Creative Assembly, by heading back to the Japanese feudal period featured in its famous game Shogun, which was launched in 2000, has come a full circle with the release of Shogun 2. Movie fans might have heard of Akira Kurosawa’s classic Kagemusa and Ran, both based on two famous daimyo in the era – Takeda Shingen and Mori Motonari.

I have been a huge fan of the Total War series but as the studio’s ambitions grew, the games became too complex, buggy and unwieldy.

Razer Anansi

Razer Anansi

  • Macro recording
  • Seven thumb-modifier keys
  • Five extra gaming keys
  • Multi-coloured key backlighting

With all the sophisticated games out there, regular keyboards are just not good enough for gamers anymore. They need one that has special features to help them unleash moves and commands faster. If you are a massively multi player online (MMO) game fan, the Razer Anansi should be on your shortlist of keyboards to get.

Sumptuous-looking with backlit keys that display a spectrum of colours, it has five gaming keys at the side mainly for executing recorded macros; and seven keys at the lower part that are designed to be accessible with your thumb.

There are two USB plugs which must be connected to your PC before the keyboard can work. I tried connecting it to a USB hub at first but that proved iffy, as the computer kept switching between detecting and not recognising the keyboard. Be sure to leave two USB ports free on your PC.

Set-up is easy. Download and install a driver from the Razer website, a process that should take no more than 10 minutes. However, my Windows XP computer was initially unable to recognise the keyboard and closed its control panel application whenever I tried to run it. Things were fine after I re-installed the driver.

Razer Naga MMO gaming mouse

Razer Naga MMO gaming mouse

  • 5,600dpi Razer precision 3.5G laser sensor
  • 17 fully programmable MMO-optimised buttons
  • Wired / wireless dual mode capability
  • Battery life: 72 hours of gaming

Razer Naga MMO gaming mouse
Designed for massively multiplayer online (MMO) games, this mouse leaves the gamer’s typically idle thumb with plenty to do – with 12 fully customizable buttons arranged in a grid format, accessible by the thumb.

Having all that power is great but you have to learn how to wield it.

Mastering the 12 buttons requires serious training and probably big hands too.

With my small hands, my attempt to press the buttons on the lowest part of the grid forced my index and middle fingers to slip away from the main mouse buttons, causing occasional slip-ups during intense battles. So, it is best to map the most important actions to the most accessible buttons for your thumb.
