In the interest of full disclosure, let me say I have never considered myself a Disney fan.

When I was a child, I always preferred Daffy Duck to the sometimes over-saccharin Disney characters.

But I was determined to review this Kinect Disneyland Adventures game without any bias.

And so, to my surprise, I enjoyed myself – perhaps a little too much.

I spent the first half hour of this Disneyland Adventures game happily traversing through the vibrantly modelled streets of Disneyland, occasionally stopping to hug Mickey Mouse and Snow White.

Kinect Disneyland Adventures

Players navigate the vast theme park by pointing towards the direction they wish to explore. This intuitive mechanism is surprisingly simple and easy to use, making movement a breeze.

However, the Kinect sensor would sometimes accidentally run my character into other pedestrians and objects, disorientating me. Thankfully, players with a poor sense of direction will be glad that the game provides a helpful glittering golden path to guide you to your current objective in the park.

Much of the gameplay of Disneyland Adventures revolves around the mini-games which double up as quest objectives. At the start of the game, players are given a series of tasks that span across the various mini-games scattered throughout the park.

Each mini-game is faithfully named after the real-world attractions of the theme park and range from sword-fighting with the Pirates Of The Caribbean to balloon racing with Winnie The Pooh and Tigger.

The motion controls are simple and engaging. From swinging your hands to fight using a sword to stretching your arms to fly, anyone can easily pick up the controls.

The main game is also crammed with collectables, ranging from souvenirs available from the park stores to autographs of famous Disney celebrities.

The ambient sound effects really help build the illusion of walking in the vast theme park. Disney lovers will also be treated to a wide playlist of nostalgic show tunes.

Still, as much as I enjoyed wandering around aimlessly in Disneyland, I could not help thinking I might feel more fulfilled playing a more challenging game.

But there is no denying the magical attraction of Disney.

In short, Disneyland Adventures is an appealing game that can be enjoyed by both the young and the old.

Whether you are a die-hard Disney fan or just coming along for the ride, the game will certainly take you back to when you first saw those magical characters on the silver screen.

If fans feel like the Assassin’s Creed: Revelations is a rehash of the previous game, it’s probably because it is.

With the success of Assassin’s Creed II, the concept of a master assassin running around Europe has been milked by developer Ubisoft to great effect, but that cow looks to be running dry.

To its credit, Ubisoft has tried to incorporate new elements to each sequel and each game brings new abilities for the lead character Ezio.

The previous game, Brotherhood, introduced a recruitment system as well as more weapons to play with.

I was not a fan of the recruitment option and obviously, someone on the development team must have felt the same way because Revelation does not have that feature.

In its place is some real-time strategy element where players get to place troops and obstacles to fortify a location.

Yet, while it adds a grander scope to the game, commanding an army just felt impersonal as I am someone who just wants to strike enemies up close and personal.

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations
In the end, it seems as if Ubisoft ran out of ideas on how to improve a single-player action game as the new gameplay elements only embellish, and not enhance, the original premise.

For example, the skills that players are familiar with are still here.

In a mix of historical fantasy and some bizarre science fiction elements, Desmond, the hero, is trapped in the Animus, the machine that has allowed him to explore the genetic memories of his ancestors, Ezio and Altair.

Shuttling between both ancestors, players have to completely restore the genetic memories to free Desmond.

As the new gameplay elements seem more supplemental, the focus is still on sneaking around town, killing in the shadows and trying to uncover the conspiracy – and this plays out exactly like the previous outings.

A new weapon and ability to make bombs are nice additions to the core game, but after jumping over countless rooftops and slicing up renegade soldiers for the umpteenth time, the game gets a little tired.

Fans of the series would likely still embrace the game as the action is more intense in this edition – even if some of the storyline elements do not really make a lot of sense.

With talk that this is the last game based on the current premise and any sequel will introduce a new storyline, Assassin’s Creed: Revelation serves as a nice wrap even as it leaves gamers wanting more.

As I punch buttons in response to on-screen prompts to free myself from a car that is about to be crushed, I cannot help but wonder if I am really playing a racing game.

As it turns out, it is indeed a car racing game: the 18th edition of Need For Speed.

But it is also the first time in this series that you can travel (or escape) on foot via quick-time events such as the above.

You play the role of Jackson Rourke who owes bucketfuls of money to a mysterious crime organization and is also running away from the police.

Rourke is directed to compete in an illegal street race event with a prize money of US$25million (S$32.4m) to secure his freedom.

He has to race 4,828km across the United States, from San Francisco to New York – and beat more than 200 drivers.

Need for Speed: The Run
The race is split into nine stages, with each stage divided into a number of events.

Each event has a different objective, such as overtaking a number of drivers before reaching the finishing line or reaching several checkpoints within the allocated time.

Some events require you to battle opponents one at a time; you have to overtake each opponent before the time limit and stay ahead for a certain amount of time.

You also have to deal with slow-moving vehicles and traffic police who are hot on your heels.

Depending on the difficulty level set, you might be allowed up to 10 resets if you wreck your car or miss your objectives.

You gain points for each completed objective and level up when you score enough points. As you level up, you gain perks such as nitrous upgrades or newer, faster rides.

Overall, this Need for Speed: The Run race is quite fun and challenging, with a scintillating soundtrack adding excitement and tension as you race towards the finish line.

However, it gets repetitive after a while as the objectives tend to be the same. There are some on-foot chases by the mafia or police interspersed between stages, but they are really forgettable quick-time events.

More memorable, though, are the changes in scenery as you transverse from the neon lights of Las Vegas into the dusk of Death Valley.

The single-player race is a bit short as it can be finished in about five hours. For more of a challenge, set a higher difficulty mode which allows fewer resets. Or you can try out new races that are unlocked in the Challenge series.

Of course, nothing beats racing online against other people. The multiplayer mode is divided into playlists in which you can choose to compete in muscle car battles or exotic sprint races.

More challenges will be unlocked after a certain number of objectives, such as finishing in a certain position in your race, are completed.

However, frequent ghost opponent cars, inconsistent collision physics and frame rate drops were encountered during the multiplayer races.

Need for Speed: The Run is really enjoyable while it lasts. It is a pity the single-player run is too short and the multiplayer mode too bumpy.

Apparently, I know a lot more songs by The Black Eyed Peas than I realized.

And this knowledge will determine how much players will enjoy this The Black Eyed Peas Experience game.

Presented as a concert of their songs performed in different locations, players join the band on stage to dance with the quartet.

The scoring here is slightly different: players need to match the moves of the group to gain fans in order to win and each song has a pre-determined number of fans that players need to obtain.

Once players reach the correct number, they can progress to the next one on the 30-plus song setlist in campaign mode. If you do not win any fans after performing a move, it means you have made a mistake.

Visually, this game is vastly different from the first Experience dance title, Michael Jackson.

The Black Eyed Peas Experience
Instead of a silhouette figure, each of the Peas are carefully rendered to look like the real deal. However, once you have gone through the cycle of different concert locations, their outfits and video introductions get repetitive.

During the song, each of the teammates will take the lead in a different dance routine and this is a signal for players to switch moves as well.

At this point, the other three members will be standing behind the main dancer, mirroring the steps. While I am not a huge fan of the group to know if the moves are authentic, some of the steps, which can have will.i.am doing a knee bend while swinging his arms, look a bit out of place, as if they were designed for his teammates.

Skill-wise, it is more stylistic than Just Dance 3, offering more precise steps, but does not reach the level of difficulty in Dance Central 2.

Another plus with this The Black Eyed Peas Experience game: Players can sing along to their best-selling songs.

Unlike SingStar or Rock Band, which has pitch bars to show if players are crooning off key, singing here is merely doing your best to mimic Fergie’s voice and trying to fill the lyrics bar at the bottom of the screen in red.

Given the unique nature of their songs though, pitch bars probably offer no help as few would try singing their songs unless they really know the tunes.

Singing adds no fans to your score but serves as a multiplier during two-player mode to increase your team’s score. This turns the two-player game into a party game with two singers and two dancers.
