With all the sophisticated games out there, regular keyboards are just not good enough for gamers anymore. They need one that has special features to help them unleash moves and commands faster. If you are a massively multi player online (MMO) game fan, the Razer Anansi should be on your shortlist of keyboards to get.

Sumptuous-looking with backlit keys that display a spectrum of colours, it has five gaming keys at the side mainly for executing recorded macros; and seven keys at the lower part that are designed to be accessible with your thumb.

There are two USB plugs which must be connected to your PC before the keyboard can work. I tried connecting it to a USB hub at first but that proved iffy, as the computer kept switching between detecting and not recognising the keyboard. Be sure to leave two USB ports free on your PC.

Set-up is easy. Download and install a driver from the Razer website, a process that should take no more than 10 minutes. However, my Windows XP computer was initially unable to recognise the keyboard and closed its control panel application whenever I tried to run it. Things were fine after I re-installed the driver.

I did not have any problems with it on a Windows 7 PC.

Razer’s keyboard control panel software lets users select their personal preferences, as well as record macros and assign keys for gameplay or other programs.

The software’s interface is mostly straightforward and easy to use. However, it lacks on-screen instructions and may faze those who are new to using a macro-enabled keyboard.

I love the touch of this keyboard, which has keys that are well spaced out and produce soft feedback when pressed. I love that it is quiet too, which means you do not have to worry about disturbing your family members when playing games late into the night.

However, I did find the font printed on the keys a little difficult to read. This is especially the case for the letters of the alphabet as the keyboard uses a mix of upper and lower case. Although the futuristic font contributed to the overall aesthetics of the keyboard, certain letters such as ‘r’ and ‘T’, and ‘Y’ and ‘U’, which are located side by side, were difficult to tell apart.

Overall, the Razer Anansi is an effective keyboard for those who want to take their PC gaming to the next level, although using it as a regular keyboard may prove tricky because of the hard-to-read font.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops
One of the most anticipated games of this year has finally hit the stores. And it promises to be a wild ride of explosive action and amazing multiplayer gameplay.

The setting is the Cold War. You are Alex Mason, an elite covert agent from the United States.

However, there is no bravado at the start of the game. You have been captured and are being grilled by your captors, who want nothing less than the mass destruction of your country.

They need a secret key to do so and only you – Mason – have that key.

Your mind goes a little haywire under the intense interrogation and slips into flashbacks. Players play out the flashbacks, which are done from the point of view of Mason, as well as those of his compatriots.

In classic Call Of Duty fashion, the tales are gripping, with explosions and loud orders threatening to drown out your thoughts.

There are moments when there is a delicious mix of brooding menace and raw action.

In one Vietnam mission, for example, players sneak into a Vietcong compound and set up C4 charges while silently taking out enemies.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Limited Edition

Once the explosions go off, mayhem follows as hordes of frantic enemy soldiers open fire at will. The action then suddenly melts away and Mason has to clear a suffocating enemy tunnel armed with nothing but a revolver and a flashlight.

Cut to another scene and you are flying an SR-71 Blackbird plane. You peer through a tiny screen and are aided by a satellite picture of the ground. Guiding a group of snow-blinded troops, you have to ensure they avoid enemy patrols.

When the fighting breaks out, you take on the role of one of the ground troops, before being transported back into the Blackbird cockpit. Brilliant.

But there are misses, too. Take a level called Baikonur. After the initial covert entry goes sour, the scene explodes into a constant barrage of action that feels like an action movie gone wrong.

I like the gritty realism of this game, which is imparted by the Cold War setting. Unlike its predecessor Modern Warfare 2, you will not be be running around with an ACR rifle and toting a heartbeat sensor. Instead, you fight with classic weapons like the M16 and whip up crude field tricks like taping two magazines of ammunition together.

Multilayer game-play has been beefed up considerably in Black Ops. Maps now feel more open. You can use in-game ‘CoD’ points – which you earn by leveling up or completing contracts – to buy whatever weapons you need or fancy.
