The Duke is back after a 14-year holiday, but the egomaniacal, macho male chauvinist hero should have just stayed – or played – dead.

His vulgar, crass-talking one-liners and antics have lost their appeal and pointing his middle finger at an exploding alien mothership does not seem cool anymore.

The occasional splatter of semi-nude scenes and sexual innuendo is hardly titillating, and slapping inanimate bosoms on walls is simply distasteful – no, downright disturbing.

The developers are obviously trying to tap into gamers’ nostalgia but times have changed. Sorry, Duke, but it’s just not cool to be the Duke anymore.

The bigger problem is with the game controls. I remember the early days of the Xbox when players tried to port PC shooters into the console. That was disastrous. It was simply impossible to aim and shoot using dual thumbsticks instead of keyboard and mouse.

Things have definitely improved over the years with modern shooters but it does feel like Duke Nukem Forever has been marooned between Stone Age and the 21st century. It was tough to aim and shoot accurately.

The game’s possible salvation is its variety of things to do. You don’t just shoot aliens. You can take steroids to turn your fists into killing machines. You can shrink the enemy down to size with the shrinkray gun, and then stomp them for an instant kill.

Having a beer toughens your body temporarily but it also blurs your vision and plays havoc with your shooting accuracy.

Duke gets shrunk too and when that happens, he can jump into a remote-controlled toy car and drive it around, leaping across chasms created by broken furniture and jumping on sofas like a trampoline to reach high areas.

Instead of a life bar, Duke has his ego bar, which increases when he does macho stuff like bench presses or winning at a pinball machine. When he gets hurt, the bar drops and Duke needs to run away and rest to recharge, just like the shields in the Halo series.

Sadly, the only storm the Duke created was a minor public relations maelstrom when its publisher, Take Two’s PR firm, tweeted that it was checking game reviews to see which reviewers, based on their critiques, would get their hands on games in the future.

The PR firm – the Redner Group – was unceremoniously sacked soon afterwards, as Take Two speedily distanced itself from its PR firm’s statement.

Poor Duke, may he rest in peace, forever.

Get creative and experiment

Choose your guns carefully because you can carry only two with you at all times. But do not be afraid to experiment.

Carrying a shotgun at all times might feel like a security blanket for its effective stopping power but you are missing out on some cool action with stuff like the freeze and shrinking gun.

You need to interact with the environment to raise your maximum ego bar. Looking at yourself in the mirror, bench pressing more than

400 pounds and excelling at pinball works wonders for your ego and as a result, your hit points.

Sometimes it seems like you are stuck in the game. Keep trying. If you have been shrunk, you often need to move things around and jump from place to place to reach a switch that will open a door to progress in the game.

The alien mothership turret fight can also be a challenge. Do not overheat the turret when firing. Instead of pressing the trigger down continuously, fire short bursts at the mothership.

But you often have to switch to firing at the bombers that fly at you and take them out fast.
