PlayStation 3′s security hacked

Hackers have cracked the built-in security of the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3), the BBC reported. The hack allows anyone to potentially run any software, including pirated games, on the popular game console.

Last month at the Chaos Communication Congress – an annual meeting of hackers – in Berlin, a hacker group which calls itself ‘fail0verflow’ showed how to extract the secret keys that are used by the PS3 to load games and software.

Following that, a United States hacker named George Hotz used a similar method to extract the PS3′s master key and posted it on his blog.

The group fail0verflow said it was against piracy and that its hack was to allow other operating systems and home-brew software to be installed on the PS3.

According to the BBC report, while previous hacks of the PS3 could be blocked by software updates, the only way to fix this latest crack may be through new hardware.
