Razer Tron Gaming Keyboard and Mouse

Razer TRON Gaming Mouse

Fans of the Tron movie are clearly the target buyers of these devices. The Tron mouse and Tron keyboard are gaming-grade devices from Razer, but you can find similar performing peripherals from it at a lower price.

The Razer TRON Gaming Mouse, for instance, features the company’s fastest 5,600dpi laser sensor, which is also found in the Razer Death Adder mouse.

The Tron mouse is designed to look like a light cycle from the movie. It has a small LED light at the rear and two wavy streaks of blue LED lights hugging the mouse from top to bottom.

Swipe the mouse across the Tron mouse mat and it leaves a fluorescent trail on it. This is created by a light at the bottom of the mouse which activates the mat’s fluorescence material. The faint light trail makes the effect rather gimmicky-looking, but if you are a huge Tron fan, there is now more reason to play with your mouse.

When I connected the mouse to the laptop for the first time, I noticed a special light and sound effect. The dual streak of lights come on together with the signature ‘rez’ sound from the movie. Rezzing is what happens in the movie when something gets turned on in the virtual grid world, like when the hero creates a light cycle.

The Tron mouse tracks very well. It feels the same as the Death Adder but unlike the latter, it has an ambidextrous design and has two sets of buttons on each side.

The keyboard is either a pleasure to look at or an eyesore, depending on how big a Tron fan you are.

Like the mouse, it has the signature dual light streaks, arranged horizontally near the top and bottom edges of the keyboard. There is the same light and sound effect when the PC boots up or when you are connecting the keyboard for the first time.

This all looks very cool but I have a quibble. To accommodate the bottom light streak, the space bar is set lower than that of most other keyboards.

This is a serious problem for me as I keep missing it during typing.

Having tried Razer’s Black Widow keyboard with its mechanical clacking keys, the feel of the Tron keyboard leaves me less than impressed. The flat and slim keys make typing a less intuitive experience.

Having said that, the unit I previewed was an engineering unit and the final product that hits the shelf might well have a better feel.

The niftiest feature is the detachable number keypad, which can fit on either side of the keyboard – great for both right- and left-handed users.

The individual keys will be illuminated with a Tron blue glow.
