The PS3 went slim last year, which is a huge contrast from the original bulky model launched in 2006. The latest iteration has a 320GB hard drive.
The console (above) has a wide spectrum of games, including exclusive titles such as the charismatic Little Big Planet, the cinematic Heavy Rain and the cataclysmic God Of War III.
It also doubles as a Blu-ray player for high-definition movies, which is handy when you need to take a break from playing games.
Through firmware updates, the PS3 will have the ability to project stereoscopic 3-D visuals for compatible games and even play Blu-ray 3-D movies. You will still need a 3-D high-definition TV and a pair of active-shutter glasses to enjoy the 3-D effects though.
PS3 gamers can also play multiplayer games free-of-charge and buy games and other content from the PlayStation Network service.
The PS3 has rudimentary motion control built into the original six-axis gamepad controllers and the newer DualShock 3 controllers, but few games really took advantage of the ability to shake or tilt these controllers.
Enter the new wireless PlayStation Move motion controller (top), a cross between a coloured ice-cream cone and Harry Potter’s magic wand.
The $69 Move, which needs the PlayStation Eye camera to read its movements, is said to offer more accuracy than the upgraded Nintendo MotionPlus accessory for the Wiimote.
It uses Bluetooth connectivity and has light emitting diodes.
The Move motion controller can be used to represent a tennis racket, a sword and even a gun in supported games and, yes, you need to buy one for every player if the game supports multiplayer action.
You might also need the optional Move navigation controller, a gadget sidekick that replicates the functions of a regular PS3 controller for one-hand use.
Some of the launch games for PlayStation Move include Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition and Time Crisis: Razing Storm. A few existing games like Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 can support the Move controller after a software update.
